Dishwashers - Repair or Buy New?

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Does your environmental conscience, reminding you that your decision to possibly send another large appliance to the landfill because there is a newer and better model that could be installed in its place, throw you into a bed of guilt? You don’t face this problem alone and it is a tough decision: is it better to get rid of a dishwasher with problems or should you try to repair it? Here are some arguments for both sides that will hopefully help you decide which works best for you and the planet.

In Favor of Buying New

Don’t feel guilty replacing an old dishwasher because most newer models are built to run more efficiently and use a lot less energy. In fact, keeping an old clunker could be costing you more money each year to run than you would spend buying a new one. Well, not right away, but you will see some savings. For example, we recently swapped out an old fridge (no choice on that one, the door fell off) and noticed an almost 15% reduction in our monthly electric bill. Plus money can’t buy the happiness that comes from having a now much quieter running appliance. So consider that over time, the cost of buying new compared to the extra money spent running your old dishwasher, will save you money.

Dishwasher Parts and Repair

Maybe your appliance is still reasonably new, but has recently broken down. What do you do when your dishwasher needs to be repaired? If your dishwasher is like the old clunker described above, replace it. If it isn’t, and it has the features you like, you may want to try and repair it. If you have any mechanical skills and access to tools you can order parts online for many popular models. If that is not an option, you’ll need to factor in both the cost of labor and parts when considering a repair. For a medium priced dishwasher or a high-end one the cost of repair with replacement parts could be well worth it. But for a lower priced model, the total cost of repair may exceed the price of your machine.

Before You Buy That Stroller

Monday, August 18th, 2008

If I ask you to close your eyes and visualize a stroller, what image immediately pops into your mind? Is it a dainty pink and white baby doll carriage pushed by a little girl in the park (a pram/carriage stroller)? Is it a sleek, aerodynamic masterpiece of a stroller pushed by a dad during his morning run (a jogging stroller)? Or is it an empty, stroller being pushed effortlessly down the aisles of the grocery store by its intended occupant, who prefers driving over riding (a lightweight stroller)?

The beauty of today’s stroller market is that parents have a wide array of stroller products from which to choose. When you close your eyes and visualize, any number of stroller images can pop into your mind.

Now, let’s take a moment to demystify each of the stroller types. The major types of strollers are standard, umbrella, lightweight, travel systems, strollers for multiples (including doubles, triples, quads, quints and sit & stands), jogging strollers and prams/carriage strollers. Different types of strollers have different intended uses and features. You, as a parent, must ask yourself the following questions when deciding which type of stroller is best for you and your little one.

1) Where will I be going?

If you’re taking quick trips to the grocery store or the mall, you’ll need something light and easy that can comfortably navigate down narrow store aisles. If you’re trudging up and down subway stairs, child, bags and stroller in tow, you’ll need something that doesn’t require the strength of Hercules. Both of these tasks can most easily be tackled with the help of an umbrella or lightweight strollers. Umbrella strollers serve for many parents, as a secondary stroller for just this type of travel.

2) Who needs a lift?

If you’re toting twins, you’ll probably want a side-by-side double stroller with ample storage space. If you have a baby and a toddler, you might opt for a sit & stand stroller, which allows baby to stay snuggled in the stroller while big sibling hitches a ride on the platform behind whenever he or she tires of running circles around you. If you have a newborn baby, you’ll want to save a jogging stroller until your child reaches the age of at least 6 months.

3) Will I take my little with me one my morning jog?

With their shock absorbers and 3 big bicycle wheels, jogging strollers are specifically designed for smooth, comfortable rides over rocky terrain.

4) How big is my trunk or backseat?

Consider the portability of a stroller as you make your purchasing decisions. If you have little storage space in your vehicle, or want something that can even go in an airplane’s overhead bin, you’ll want something with a lightweight frame that is easy to fold. You’ll want something with wheels that aren’t so big as to inspire nightmares later. You’ll probably want a lightweight or umbrella stroller.

5) How many gadgets do I want?

Most strollers come well-equipped with features that parents have come to know and love. A canopy is a must for protecting your child from the sun and the rain. One-handed folding allows you to hold your baby and open or close the stroller simultaneously. A play/snack tray keeps your child occupied when you need it most. Adjustable handlebars make life easier for tall parents. The stroller most likely to have these and any other feature that you might dream of is the standard stroller. It comes fully-loaded and ready for action.

6) How important is it for me to transport my child from the car to the stroller with as little disturbance as possible?

If this is of great concern to you, a travel system is your best bet. A travel system comes with a matching car seat that locks into the stroller when it’s time to move from the car to the rest of the world.

Parents, be sure to keep all of these things in mind when you decide which stroller is best for you. Whatever your choice, also make sure that your stroller is certified by JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association). Paying close attention to these factors will keep you and your child safe and happy.

The Benefits Of Christmas Shopping Online

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I recently did a radio interview with a station based out of Arkansas and we were discussing the differences between doing your Christmas shopping at the local mall versus shopping online. I made the point that many consumers still like to go the mall to get some of that Holiday vibe and the sense of giving that is such a large part of the Christmas spirit. The DJ that was interviewing me then pointed out that you lose a lot of that warm and fuzzy feeling when you have to fight the crowded parking lot and the rush of finding gifts when you only have a limited amount of time to spend at the mall.

Don’t Fight Those Crowds

In this case, the DJ was a big proponent of online shopping and online coupons, hence this is the reason I was on his show, but he brings up some good points. People are starting to use online shopping as a strong alternative to fighting the crowds at local stores and malls. This is evident by the fact that online shopping in 2006 has really gone through the roof and is up 23% over 2005 numbers as consumers are starting to catch on to the convenience and great deals that can be found online.

Information At Your Fingertips

As I pointed out in the interview, the main benefits of doing your Christmas shopping online are two-fold. First, the amount of information and research at your disposal on the Internet is quite impressive. This includes buying guides, user reviews of products, and price comparisons at different online stores. All of these are not going to be readily available to you when you walk into a brick and mortar store to do some shopping. Secondly, many online retailers offer coupon codes that can get you things like free shipping, or 10%, 15% , or sometimes 20% off your purchase. These coupon codes are typically only for online usage. Free shipping coupons in particular are very popular around the Holidays, as many consumers are afraid to shop online thinking the shipping charges will outweigh any benefits.

Keep Your Sanity

So this Holiday shopping season I would urge you to try shopping online and to keep a running total of the savings you received when using online coupons. For me personally, the time wasted in busy parking lots and long lines in stores also has a value, but it is hard to put a dollar figure on time wasted. Nonetheless, I found the holiday season to be much more enjoyable and peaceful when I avoided busy malls and shopped exclusively online. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Now you know the Democrats position on various issues of national importance affecting the common citizen’s life. Did that help you make-up your mind? Hope so.

I love politics. My Texan Democrat Blog I want to get out there and support the democratic party.

IOC denies deal on internet curbs

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Olympic organisers deny agreeing to curbs on internet access for foreign journalists at the Beijing Games next week.

Being on a cheerleading squad can be a fun and exciting experience, but making the team can be difficult. Many times talented girls are overlooked because they just aren’t prepared, but you can take some steps to get yourself noticed and give yourself a leg-up for getting on the team.

Before you even get started, find out what is required to be on the squad and make sure you’re able to meet those requirements. Cheering can be expensive and time consuming. If you decide to stop after you’ve started, you’ll have wasted not only your own effort, but that of your parents, coaches and everyone else on the squad. Find out how much it will cost and what kind of a commitment it will take ahead of time. You also might want to consider getting a physical to see if you’re able to do such demanding activities.

After you’ve decided you want to try out, you should first talk to coaches and others to find out exactly what is required, this includes deadlines and paperwork, along with specific skills you’ll need to know to make the team. This will not only make you breathe easier by knowing what to expect, you’ll also get your face out there so they’ll know you’re dedicated and up to the challenge. Once you get this information, learn what you’ll need to know. Watch old tapes (the cheer coach should have copies and will hopefully be impressed that you want to see them). Take initiative to learn the moves and cheers ahead of time. Research online. If you don’t know what a move is, look it up or ask someone for help.

Once you know what you need to learn, you should get started on learning it. If you aren’t in shape, you need to get there. This means eating right and working out, but it also means developing the specific muscles and skills that will be needed to cheer. You should enroll in cheer, gymnastics, tumbling, or dance classes. You should also attend cheer camps if you can. You might even consider joining a different cheer squad. Many YMCA’s and other similar organizations have cheer squads where you can learn the skills and get real experience.

Once you know the skills you’ll need and the cheers you need to learn (from the tapes, or from going to games and other cheer events), you should start practicing, A LOT. Tape yourself doing the moves, if need be, compare it to video tapes of current cheerleaders. Have friends or parents objectively observe you and tell you what they think needs work. This might feel weird, but if you can’t cheer in front of them, you’ll have a harder time cheering in front of a big crowd.

Some people may advise you against it, but a good way to improve your chances of making the squad is by talking to a current cheerleader. You obviously want to talk to the cheerleader that you think is the nicest and most likely to help you, but picking a senior is also a good bet. Seniors are not only not going to be competing with you for a spot on the team, they also have invested 4 years and this specific squad and want to see that it’s headed in a good direction once they leave. Helping someone who’s very dedicated is a good investment in helping the team to succeed in the future and many of them will be happy to help you. They know exactly what is expected and are likely to be honest and helpful to you. And, in some squads, they have input on who makes the team or not.

While you may think cheer skills are all you need to make the squad, they’re not. Like it or not, personal appearance matters. As a cheerleader, it is your responsibility to represent your school, and not just when you’re cheering. You need to work on looking good and keeping up your personal appearance. Not only does it help people have a better opinion of you, it will also make you feel better to know you look good. And even if you’re not the prettiest girl in the world, you can still look good. You can always look to see what the girls on the squad are wearing, or how they do their hair and make-up. You don’t have to be a clone of them, just think of them as advisors. They’ve already got what you want, so they’re a good starting point.

Along with how you look, how you act matters too. It’s important for a cheerleader to be able to present a positive attitude. You need to practice not only smiling, but also positive body posture. Sit up straight, hold your head high, look people in the eye, be confident. The most important part of making others think your right for the job is to act like you know you’re right for the job.

If you follow these steps, you’ve definitely improved your chances of being on the cheer squad. Just remember when it comes to the tryouts not to be nervous. You should smile, look them in the eye and be confident. You worked hard to get on the team and you deserve to be there. If you do mess up, don’t make a big deal out of it. If you just keep going and keep smiling, it’s much less obvious and easily overlooked. And if you don’t make the squad, it’s not the end of the world. You should feel proud of yourself that you worked hard to accomplish something you wanted. And remember, there’s always next year.
